Zygmunt Libucha
Zygmunt Libucha studied Electrical Sciences in his native Poland,
however he yearned to learn a craft, to shape things with his hands.
Instead of fulfilling a parental ambition he became a silversmith
apprentice in Gdańsk's leading workshop, where he passed his
journeyman exam and obtained his Master’s Certificate, while at the
same time spending his evenings carving wood in a sculptor’s studio
next to the silversmithing workshop. He later went on to create
sculptures in bronze in that studio.
In 1982 Libucha migrated to Australia, where the richness and beauty
of Australia greatly inspired him, and he became well known as a
sculptor who depicted Australian flora and fauna. Having created an
extensive body of work, Libucha sold the pieces in galleries in North
Sydney, Canberra and Melbourne.
Shortly after his move to Brisbane in 1988 he started to work in
stone and operate from his Red Hill studio. In addition to bronze,
Libucha works in marble, granite and sandstone, with black Chillago
marble being his favourite stone.
